Is MBA just glorified common sense?

It was always a desire to know what goes on within the MBA classrooms, as many were enthralled by the concept of management. It was always known and believed that management was nothing more than proper usage of common sense with heaps of lingo and assumptions. The faith was rather confirmed when Prof. Kumar conceded that management is indeed common sense and they are just trying to tell us how to use common sense more efficiently.

The background goes something like this: He was telling us about Human Resource Management in an organization, where he enlightened what a manager is supposed to do and what are his duties/responsibilities. Right through the lecture I was wondering why it takes an MBA to realize all this; I couldn’t stop myself from telling him that I felt it was no more than common sense. And the professor nodded in authentication.

The truth is that at some level each one of us is a manager. Over time we learn the tricks and trades of being a manager, over experiences and leanings. That implies one can’t alter an inherent non-manager into a manager. A really good manager doesn’t need a degree from a branded institute to prove his worth.

At the same time if one studies it properly, it is a learning of theories and social science and model of mathematics, which will help to manage more efficiently. In addition, what may be common sense for one may not necessarily be the common sense at all for others. It is amazing what some is difficult to one maybe simple for very intellectual person. There is always a disagreement on the value addition of a MBA course. The activists state that it helps individuals understand and think from a business outlook, efficiently handle all the resources available, building policies and so on.

It has been noticed that since the day the students join MBA course, they would have learned so many things which they might not have learnt had they continued with job straight after graduation. And there are lot of academics involved in MBA & not just suit-ties & fancy presentations.

“You do not get what you ought to have, you get what you bargain”, quote from one of my professor. One may have done the best of methodical work, but if that can’t influence the stakeholder about its significance, the efforts may go ineffective. The turnaround is also true. It gives pleasure of pursuing a vision despite all odds, the respect that it earns and the practical experiential learning. The kind of exposure one gets in terms of learning material and information sources. The fact that it’s 80% glorified glassy common sense, 20% substantial stuff.

The course normally progress by giving a general over view of various specializations through a few subjects of each and then the students select courses as per their area of interest. This is contrary to the way a person usually moves in his career path. He/she starts with operational level stuff closely related to his/her area of expertise, and then gradually presumes general, managerial & human resource management tasks, either explicitly or implicitly

Just in engineering, subjects of a particular specialization taught in the start are, quite obviously forgotten by students of other specs by the time they complete. As a result there remains a very thin line between teaching unlike specialization subject in very early part and not teaching them at all in the first place. This format is all right with other courses as in all possibility the other graduates are offered a specific technical role; but an MBA graduate is expected to be a manager with generalist skills as well. The flow of the course will be better in line with that of a person’s career path of moving from specialization to generalization role & will also help to increase the overall learning’s.

"In general the concept of MBA is rapidly increasing with great elevation and there are many institutes and universities coming up with their schedule. If it is accomplished with merit then it’s a boon or it’s just a procedure that will surely ends up much ahead from the middling competitors."

MBA has significant role to play in today’s job industry as every industry seeks proficiency from their individuals. No matter what is the spirit of the business is, there has always been loaded need to sell the products. Every company believes that good administrator will harvest good results through constructive and sensible thinking. MBA is one of the highly presumed degrees for traders all over the world. MBA has got the whole thing one needs and would require to deal with the business subjects. That is the basis that it is one of the most reputed and highly pursued courses all over the world.

The solid reason why MBA is said to be glorified common sense are:

Those students who pursue MBA from a reputed business school are considered among the best in the world. Also as these students are highly paid amongst others, it has to be overvalued. This may be due to the high salary packages given to those after completing MBA.

These days each one wants to do MBA and the main cause for this is that the possibility of growth in this field is much more when compared to any other field.

Also it’s open for any graduate from any field, the scale for simple arts graduate is nowhere but when the same graduate completes his MBA from any top institute his importance is much more increased. Not only graduates but also other graduates like software engineers are moving towards MBA because of promising growth as well as high salary packages.

In general the concept of MBA is rapidly increasing with great elevation and there are many institutes and universities coming up with their schedule. If it is accomplished with merit then it’s a boon or it’s just a procedure that will surely ends up much ahead from the middling competitors.

Young aspirant managers outfitted with a reputed management degree go round to be survivors who will be able to uphold themselves in an atmosphere of strong competition. In fact, producing powerful managers is the biggest challenge that world face today.

MBA is a turning point in a student’s career, both in personal as well as professional lives which also makes them to feel good to be a person who uses his/her common sense as “MBA is itself a glorifies common sense”.
