GATE : Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering

The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE), is an All-India Examination conducted by the seven Indian Institutes of Technology and the Indian Institute of Science, Banglore, on behalf of the National Coordinating Board - GATE, Department of Education, Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD), Government of India.

What is GATE ?

What is the objective of GATE ?


The objective of GATE is to identify meritorious and motivated candidates for admission to Postgraduate Programs Engineering at the national level. Some Engineering Colleges/Institutes specify GATE as a mandatory qualification even for admission for Postgraduate Programs. It serves as a benchmark for normalization of the Undergraduate Engineering Education in the country.
   

Do the Postgraduate Institutions select the candidate based on the GATE score only?

Admission to postgraduate courses, with MHRD scholarship/assistantship, in Engineering/Technology/Architecture/Pharmacy at Colleges/Institutes/Universities in the country will be open only to those who qualify in GATE, But the candidates are required to find out the procedures of final selection and award of Scholarship/Assistantship from the institution to which they seek admission, because the importance of GATE score differs for different institutions.
   

Which institution is organizing the GATE ?

Every year one IIT or IISc is selected as the Organizing Institute. Indian Institute of Technology Madras is the organizing institution of GATE - 2005.



What is the eligibility criteria for appearing the GATE ?

The following categories of candidates are eligible to appear for GATE
Bachelor's degree holders in Engineering/Technology/Architecture/Pharmacy and those who are in the final or pre-final year of such programmes.

Master's degree holders in any branch of Science/Mathematics/Statistics or equivalent and those who are in the final or pre-final year of such programmes. However, if the degree is in Master of Computer Applications, the candidates should have had courses in Mathematics at the Bachelor's/Master's level.

Candidates in the second or higher year of the four- year integrated master's degree programme (Post-B.Sc.) in Engineering/Technology or in the third or higher year of   five-year Integrated Master's or Dual Degree programme in Engineering/Technology.

Candidates with Qualifications obtained through examination conducted by professional societies recognized by UPSE/ AICTE as equivalent to B.E./B.Tech. Those who have completed Section A or equivalent of such professional courses are also eligible.

What are the different papers available in GATE 2005 ?

GATE 2005 wil be having the following papers of 3 hours duration and of 150 marks.One can appear in only any one of the paper.

Can I select any of the paper for GATE-2005 ?

Candidates are expected to appear in the paper appropriate to their descipline of their qualifying degree. However the candidate is free to choose any of the paper according to their admission plan.
 

GATE - 2014

  • GATE 2014, organized by IIT Kharagpur.
  • Application fee is increased from INR 1200 to INR 1500 for general category, OBC male/other candidates, and INR 750 for all female candidates and SC, ST male/other candidates.
  • Examinations will be held during forenoon and afternoon sessions on alternate weekends (Saturday and Sunday) between 1st February 2014 and 2nd March 2014. Examination for some of the papers in GATE 2014 will be held in multiple sessions.

Application Process: For GATE 2014, as in GATE 2013, all information related to the candidates’ will be available in a single GATE Online Application Processing System (GOAPS). Candidates have to register/enroll and fill the application via ONLINE mode ONLY by accessing the zonal GATE websites of IISc and any of the seven IITs. The photograph and signature of the applicant must be uploaded during the online application. The application process becomes complete only when a printout of the filled ONLINE application with the candidate’s signature and a good quality photograph affixed in the appropriate place is received by the respective Zonal GATE offices along with necessary documents, if any, on or before 10th October 2013. Please note that application forms are not available for sale anywhere else.


Downloadable Admit Card: Admit cards will NOT be sent by e-mail/post, they can ONLY be downloaded from the zonal GATE websites from 1st January 2014. The candidate has to bring the printed admit card to the test center along with at least one original (not photocopied / scanned copy) and valid (not expired) photo identification. It may be noted that one of the following photo identifications is ONLY permitted: Driving license, Passport, PAN Card, Voter ID, Aadhaar UID, College ID, Employee identification card, or a notarized affidavit with Photo, Signature, Date of Birth and Residential Address. The details of this ID proof have to be given while filling the online application.


Numerical Answer Type Questions: The question paper for GATE 2014 will consist of questions of both multiple-choice type and numerical answer type. For multiple choice type questions, candidates have to choose the answer from the given choices. Numerical answer type questions are not multiple-choice type; the candidates have to enter a number as the answer using a virtual keypad.
